Spokane

Railways, river falls, and Inland Northwest reinvention.

introduction

Overview

Spokane splits around a torrential river gorge that powers its downtown history. Red-brick railyards and grand Gilded Age structures give the core a solid, muscular weight. You walk everywhere central within twenty minutes, moving between restored 1920s theaters, urban waterfalls, and craft distilleries. Expect cold winters, hot summer air, and a city focused sharply on outdoor access.

Airport transport trick

STA Route 60 connects Spokane International Airport directly to downtown in 20 minutes for $2.00 cash or contactless pay.

World's Fair legacy

Riverfront Park hosted Expo '74, turning downtown railyards into an urban park anchored by Spokane Falls.

food

Inland Empire eats and craft spirits

Spokane relies heavily on regional produce from the Palouse farming basin and Washington grains. Wheat, wild huckleberries, and craft brewing anchor the city's food culture. Downtown features restored mid-century diners side-by-side with tasting rooms.Local distillers turned Spokane into Washington's pioneer for craft grain-to-glass spirits. Expect menus to focus heavily on regional trout, Pacific salmon, and seasonal fruit crisps during late summer.

  • Railcar breakfasts

Frank's Diner serves scratch-made hashbrowns inside an authentic 1906 observation car on 2nd Avenue. Expect weekend morning waits up to 45 minutes.

  • Grain-to-glass spirits

Dry Fly Distilling opened Washington's first craft distillery since Prohibition. Visit their downtown location for wheat whiskey tastings and cocktail flights.

  • Summer huckleberries

Wild huckleberries harvested in July and August appear across Spokane menus. Try huckleberry pancakes or ice cream at local markets along South Hill.

history

A short history

Spokane grew around the energy of its falls, long a salmon gathering site for the Spokane Tribe. European settlement built a rail hub that served eastern Washington wheat farmers and northern Idaho silver mines.A catastrophic fire in 1889 rebuilt the center in stone, setting the brick architectural frame that remains today. In 1974, Spokane became the smallest city ever to host a World's Fair, permanently clearing core rail lines for parkland.

  1. 1881

    City Incorporation

Spokane Falls incorporates as a town, taking advantage of water power for timber sawmills along the river.

  2. 1889

    Great Spokane Fire

Fire destroys 32 blocks of downtown. The city rebuilds strictly with brick, terra cotta, and stone architecture.

  3. 1974

    Expo '74

Spokane hosts the World's Fair, removing downtown railyards to create the 100-acre Riverfront Park along the falls.

  4. 2007

    Fox Theater Restoration

A $31 million restoration saves the 1931 Art Deco Fox Theater, sparking renewed downtown cultural investment.
