A short history
Founded as Odessos by Miletian Greeks in the 6th century BC, Varna grew into a major Black Sea trading center. Roman rulers built massive thermal baths in the 2nd century AD. Ottoman rule reshaped its urban layout until Bulgarian independence in 1878, after which Varna became the nation's premier port and holiday resort.
