I spent over ten days at Totem House and it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. The place feels like a cozy, warm little home with a beautiful garden and an amazing atmosphere. The staff became like family to me; thank you all for creating such a welcoming and peaceful space. I’ll definitely return to this little home ❤️ A special shout‑out to owner Elen for her warmth, care, hospitality, and for making me feel at home. “Unsafe and horrible treatment. Do not stay here!”

Nothing positive to mention. First, the property should be listed as Balangan, not Uluwatu, because that misleads travelers unfamiliar with the area. It’s nowhere near Uluwatu’s main attractions, and even Grab drivers often refuse rides to or from the property or demand extra payment. The claim that it is “centrally located” is simply wrong. From the moment we arrived, the experience was poor. The staff were unfriendly and made no effort to explain the room, facilities, or who to contact if we needed assistance. We immediately felt a negative vibe and unwelcome. On our first day, we raised concerns about how isolated the property was, especially since we were recovering from Bali belly and wanted to be closer to essential services in case of an emergency. The owner dismissed our concerns entirely. Things got even worse the first evening when we returned to find we had been given the wrong key for the main entrance. We were locked out in the dark with no way to get inside, which was incredibly frightening for us two young women. Repeated attempts to contact the property went unanswered. Grab drivers refused to come to the location, and the nearest convenience store required walking along an unlit road where we encountered aggressive dogs. With nowhere else to go, we even tried to contact emergency services for advice but received no response. In desperation, we tried climbing the property’s high wall before my friend eventually managed to force the main door open without damaging it. Had she not succeeded, we would have been left sleeping outside or accepting a man’s offer to sleep on his floor, neither of which felt safe. The following morning we requested a refund because we no longer felt safe staying there. The owner, Elen, refused, offering only a 50 % refund for the first night despite her staff admitting they had given us the wrong key and despite us providing video evidence that the key did not work. Rather than taking responsibility, she mocked us for contacting emergency services, blamed us for going out, and made us feel like we were at fault as she began filming us after my friend specifically asked her not to because she felt exposed in her pajamas. To make matters worse, when we asked for her name, she initially gave us a false one and refused to let us use a phone to contact local services while we were trying to arrange alternative accommodation. I am an experienced solo female traveler and have never felt as unsafe or poorly treated as I did here. Being locked out overnight due to the property’s mistake was unacceptable. The complete lack of accountability, empathy, and professionalism afterward made the experience even worse. It’s disappointing when businesses owned by people from outside Bali fail to adapt and uphold the culture of warmth and hospitality that the island is known for.
