The breakfast featured grilled fish with local ingredients and was delicious, and having cold water always available was a plus. The bedding required us to add our own covers, but it was clean and comfortable to sleep in. The staircase to the second floor is extremely steep, so you need to be careful, and the upstairs bathroom being only Japanese‑style was disappointing. Although the online photos showed a TV in the rooms, none of the rooms actually have one now, which should be disclosed.

The staff were genuinely friendly and the breakfast was delicious, even though the photos had shown a Western spread, I was surprised to receive a Japanese‑style meal with miso soup that even contained Izu Oshima’s “ashitaba,” a clever use of a local specialty; the evening was quiet and peaceful. I was assigned a Japanese‑style room on the first floor, but the light leading to the bath was so bright that I couldn’t fall asleep at first, and pulling down the roll‑up curtain didn’t make it any darker.

The towels and bedding felt wonderfully fluffy, but the only bath was on a 30‑minute schedule with slots only from 5 am to 8 am, which made it hard to fit around dinner time. I booked the room‑only rate and paid for dinner separately, yet I thought the dinner charge was steep.

The surroundings were lush and there was a convenient Benia supermarket nearby, but the room lacked a television and the meals could have been a bit more generous in portion size.
