The room was cramped and had an odd smell.

The mattress and tatami mats were very comfortable. The rooms are small and sparsely furnished, but that’s typical in Japan. The hot water ran out quickly; a warning would have helped (there are plenty of multilingual notices, which is useful). The ceiling fluorescent light took ages to shut off, so I had to use something to block my eyes when I fell asleep—no idea what that’s called in English.
