“our stay at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat was undoubtedly the worst experience of the entire trip”
After a month of traveling around New Zealand, our stay at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat turned out to be the worst part of the trip, and I can’t recommend it. The breakfast and dinners were terribly disappointing: on the first night the beef was tough and chewy, on the second night the duck was undercooked, almost raw, and smelled off, making it inedible; desserts were also subpar and we left most of the food untouched. The paid stargazing session was a mess – we spent two freezing hours outside but only looked through the telescope about five times, totalling just a few minutes of actual stargazing, while most of the time was spent listening to a guide give a lecture that could be found on YouTube. The guide had promised blankets if it got cold, yet despite us visibly freezing, no blankets were offered. When we mentioned the cold, the guide said we could just leave. Service and staff were lazy and inattentive; after being left out in the cold during the stargazing tour, I woke up sick. The retreat is isolated with no stores nearby, so I texted the staff the next morning asking for basic cold medicine (like 感冒冲剂) and received no response. Being ignored while sick at an isolated, supposedly premium property is unacceptable. Save your money and stay elsewhere.
