Woodbury Lodge – Amakhala Game Reserve

“A wonderful experience!”

The whole experience was wonderful. The communal lodge facilities were excellent, with many dining options that changed with the weather. The meals were very good, generous portions, delicious, and beautifully presented. The lounge bar area was very nice, with a wide range of drinks freely available. We used the pool area every day, which was lovely. Our thatched accommodation was very spacious, beautifully furnished, with a huge four‑poster bed (with an electric blanket in situ if needed) and its own viewing platform, which was great. The highlight, however, was the game drives. We had the pleasure of driving out with two nature guides, Lenny and Rob. Both gentlemen were excellent, sharing their knowledge and seeking out the animals for us. We were very fortunate to see all of the Big 5 plus many more. It was a fascinating time and we had a wonderful stay. The only downside was that our accommodation had a slightly damp smell due to its shaded location, which was a little off‑putting. There was an offer to provide a dehumidifier, but this didn’t get followed through. To be honest, we were not in the room most of the day, so it wasn’t a big deal.

The staff were very nice and helpful. The lounge was cozy, the fireplace was burning, and after the cold game drive we had cocoa with Amarula. The room should have been pre‑heated in the evenings. When we returned from the game drive in rain and cold, our door was wide open, it was freezing. Passes and other items were left in the room, and the door was simply left open by the staff who were supposed to heat and close it. The bathroom has no heating. The heating air‑conditioner is not enough for the large room (Dassie). For the price it was really uncomfortable, as the bathroom was icy cold. The guide for the game drive seemed inexperienced, stopped often, looked at the map, and didn’t know much about the animals in the park. The hippos haven’t been seen for a year.

“Super - kommen gerne wieder.”

The staff were absolutely friendly. We were received very warmly. Great amenities (with heated blankets – it was very cold at night). The food was very tasty – especially the breakfast. Our guide could have had deeper knowledge of the animals; we got more knowledge in other parks, but he did take us to great spots.

“Stunning lodge and location”

The location was stunning, set on a hillside overlooking the valley. We could see elephants walking down the hill and a variety of antelope grazing in the distance. It was so peaceful. The lodges were lovely – very comfortable. It was cold during our visit and the heated blankets were on before we went to bed, making it really cosy to sleep. The food was delicious, and you could request alternatives, e.g. for the children. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I would stay again in a heartbeat. The safari guides were so knowledgeable and gave us the best experiences on our game drives. I like that this is a private reserve and never felt too busy. It would have been nice if one pool was heated so it could be used throughout the year, but this is a minor issue.

“Only an ok visit considering the cost.”

The staff who greeted us were very friendly, but the lunch was just average. The afternoon safari felt repetitive, driving the same stretch 4-5 times and not really making an effort to spot animals; the giraffe encounter was decent. The next morning’s drive was better, yet it lingered too long on only a few animals.
