I was hunting for a budget spot in the area and ended up at Friendship House, which turned out to be pretty decent. The front desk was welcoming, the room itself was fine, and everything ran smoothly. They handed me a towel at check‑in, and the room was super quiet, so I slept well. On the downside, the wall beside my bed had damp peeling, and the student sharing the room had to deal with a constant stream of visitors, though she handled it nicely. The damp didn’t bother me much because I was mainly there to sleep.

The location near Southwark station offers great access. The rooms are simple, using a student dorm setup, which makes the rates considerably cheaper than typical hotels. There’s a shared kitchen with a fridge, so you can cook instead of eating out. A small gym is available for workouts, handy on rainy days. Plus, a Tesco Express right in front means you’ll never run out of groceries. The shower pressure was weak, especially the hot water almost didn’t come out. I used it in midsummer, so it wasn’t a big issue, but in winter it could be tough. The sink tap did provide hot water normally.

I’ve stayed here several times at Friendship House; it’s a solid choice, especially for traveling academics who are fine with dorm‑style lodging. The neighbourhood is great, with many local restaurants and bars, Tate Modern, the Southbank Centre, Borough Market, Southwark and Borough tube stations, and London Bridge and Waterloo stations all a short walk away. The staff are kind and friendly, and the place has a small gym area and self‑catering facilities. No complaints.
