I walked in feeling a bit bored, like I was at home, but the staff greeted me like family and the vibe in Barú was instantly warm. Everyone on the street flashes a smile, and I even got to paddle out in a kayak while Dris, one of the hosts, showed me the different mangrove types and explained how they protect them. The hostel actually runs a little red‑mangrove planting project, so depending on when you arrive you can help out yourself – a neat way to back eco‑tourism.

The bed was super comfy and the staff were genuinely kind, plus the meals were decent enough to keep you going. The spot sits right by a gorgeous beach (you need a boat to get there) and the mangrove view is just stunning, but the surrounding village looks pretty neglected—trash littering the streets and basic sanitation issues are obvious. It feels like the area has real potential if some public projects stepped in.

“Schönes ruhiges Kleinod abseits vom Trubel”

This tiny hostel has a lovely green courtyard with a hammock that’s perfect for a weekend escape from Cartagena. You can kayak around or hop on a boat to the Rosario Islands, and the family that runs the place is friendly enough to set up all sorts of outings. Honestly, I liked everything about it.

“Excelente alojamiento”

The staff were really friendly and the location put us close to a bunch of attractions, which was a big plus. The only hiccups were a weak water pump in the bathroom and a musty smell in the room, but overall the place met our expectations and we’ll definitely book it again if we return to Barú.
