If you’re after a genuine, rustic New Zealand experience, The Big Chook should be on your list. We stayed one night on our way home from the Catlins. Johnny and Hayley were delightful, warmly welcoming us. The beds were extremely comfortable, I had the best night’s sleep! I also loved the history of the cabin we stayed in and the remarkable recycling.

Spacious, and the hosts were very helpful. It’s a long way from the towns, and there’s limited activity to do.

The bed was very comfortable and we had a great night’s sleep—perfect for our overnight stay. Comfortably rustic.

I didn’t like anything about this property; the only highlight was watching all the rabbits out the window playing in the grass. The kitchenette has a poor layout, making it hard to reach the microwave. Room floors are at different levels and some are uneven, which was dangerous at night because of tripping. There are no bedside lights, and the light switches are away from the beds. The hand basin is stained and dirty, and there’s no mirror for shaving above it.

The place sits in a great rural spot, but I wish there had been a chair by the table so I could work on my laptop.
