“ECOLODGE”

The building is really charming, especially because of its history and organization. You have to remember that it’s a true ECOLODGE, so not all the usual comforts are there. The staff are extremely kind and helpful. It’s a one‑of‑a‑kind experience on an island like Zanzibar. I would emphasize that it’s an ECOLODGE, so people should be fully informed about the various “disadvantages” that come with it.

The spot is fantastic and the cutting‑edge composting and sustainability projects are well carried out. The staff were excellent and the local guides were knowledgeable. The resort is pricey, basically $500 a night with meals and guides included, though tips are expected. There’s an extra $25.00 a night per person charge for the island. We understood the price supported conservation and education efforts, so I’d recommend the island. Most people come over for the day, so those who stay have an intimate experience and meet really interesting people. A couple of quibbles: the chairs in the huts and lounge area were not very comfortable, and the food for lunch and dinner was fine but somewhat repetitive.

The staff are friendly, the island is calm and tranquil, and the activities offered—diving, forest walk, crab walk—are great. The setting is breathtaking. Everything was absolutely amazing.

Chumbe island is by far the most special experience we had in Zanzibar. We stayed on this tranquil island for 2 nights with our 3 children (7,14,16). The coral reef is stunning, nature are perfectly preserved, the eco lodging was surprisingly comfortable, and the staff was just great. We all enjoyed snorkling, and special thanks to Muhammad for an early morning, specially arraged extra- trip. We also loved the walk around the island when tide recedes, where you can see great amounts of sea fauna right on the beach. Rest of the time the atmosphere is so peaceful, we spent swimming, playing games, and drinking the best ginger tea ever , in great quantities. The staff truely goes out of their way to provide any comfort, and meals were delicious too. Eco lodging is not, and cannot be, a 5 star hotel (so if you feel strongly about needing that, this may not be the place for you), but is surprisingly comfortable and peaceful and everybody slept well, bathed well, and enjoyed the special experience. Finally, its realky a great place for people who want to experience Zanzibar's nature away from tourist resorts, and to afd a special memorable experience to their family trip.
