Unique, traditional rooms feature work desks and tea/coffee facilities. The estate boasts rose gardens, a lily pond, and free-roaming wildlife, with charming old staircases, fireplaces, and stained-glass windows.

The historic location just outside Edinburgh, with its stunning grounds and garden, felt like staying in a stately home. The luxurious interior and fantastic breakfast options made the bed feel extra comfy. The bedroom, though, was a former servants’ quarters—always up under the roof, with a lot of stairs and a bit cramped, as was the en‑suite bathroom.

From the moment we drove through the castle grounds, we were swept away by the magical atmosphere; the library and music room in the communal areas felt like another world, and the suite we stayed in was so spacious it won us over completely. Every detail, from the thoughtfully designed surroundings to the divine restaurant and flawless room service, made the experience unforgettable, and the magnificent grounds only added to the enchantment. The property was solid overall, with staff always ready to help and the internal facilities top‑class, though the standard rooms felt a touch cramped.

The location is wonderful, creating a truly relaxing stay, and the staff are helpful and always polite. The site and building are absolutely stunning, which is why I never want to stay elsewhere. The downstairs areas and key spots on the second floor, like the library and music room, are beautifully laid out, but some of the guest bedrooms still disappoint for the price: year after year, badly stained carpets or iron‑burn marks, small cramped showers that perform poorly, sash windows that don’t open properly, all of which combine into a tired, jaded, and somewhat misleading dilapidated appearance that doesn’t reflect how the property deserves to look. The microscopic flat screens don’t add any real ambience in my opinion.
