Watergate Resort Unawatuna

We loved the ocean view, but the off‑season renovation made the stay rough. When we checked in at night, only one staff member was on duty—she handled the front desk, coordinated kitchen orders, and even came to our room when the TV remote was problematic. She also delivered towels and toiletries. The food was mediocre. We understand it was low season, yet the overall experience was disappointing. The only bright spot was the ocean view, though opening the windows made the floor extremely damp.

“Great location / view, needs maintenance, more staff training if they want international tourists”

The location, view, room layout, and pool were all excellent, but the pricing structure was confusing—tourist rates versus local rates, something I hadn’t seen before. Only the manager spoke some English; the rest of the staff did not. The over‑bed lights failed initially but were eventually repaired. The outside lights stayed on all night for no reason, though that was fixed. The air‑con stuck on high‑speed fan and never resolved. Communicating with staff was hard, leading to confusion over room service requests, and there was no hotel or tourism information sheet available.

The villas at this hotel were beautiful – that was the only thing pleasing to the eye. The towels were gray and looked like floor rags. The place was extremely dirty, and the service was terrible. The music played loudly until 11:45 p.m., making it impossible to sleep. On the second day they even closed the gates, and it was unclear how guests were supposed to get back into the hotel. They also told us we had to pay extra for the water in the room, on top of the service charges. This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Absolutely terrible experience.

The view was nice. Nothing else.

The staff were polite and helpful. The hotel facilities, including the swimming pool, were good. No negatives.
