“Nina was outstanding - the house was NOT!”
Nina, the caretaker, was the only bright spot – she went above and beyond to keep us comfortable. Unfortunately, the property itself was a disaster. The price was wildly inflated for a rundown, dilapidated house that seemed ready to be torn down. I booked because it advertised a washing machine, but it wasn’t even plugged in. The owner said I’d have to ask Nina to do the washing because he was “sick of tenants breaking machines.” If I’d known that, I wouldn’t have booked. The listing said there were three bathrooms, but only one shower had hot water. One toilet took an entire night to refill after flushing, so four women had to share one usable bathroom – something that should have been disclosed. Every room had black mould on walls and ceilings. The TV didn’t work. The internet was spotty on mobile and kept dropping out, making it impossible to download, upload, or call home. The microwave exploded mid‑use, and later in the stay the fridge/freezer failed, spoiling all our food. No dining chair had a secure seat – it was dangerous. Sticky residue oozed from the brickwork, paint flaked off ceilings and walls, toilets and sinks were stained, there was no hot water in the kitchen, and the downstairs bathroom had no ceiling. The kitchen cupboards were literally hanging off their hinges. The house felt uninhabitable and a real health risk. Outside, the yard was full of old appliances, discarded building materials and debris. The carport even had an old unused minivan dumped inside it. We tried to leave because of health concerns, but a big event in Tonga (which we were also attending) meant no vacancies elsewhere. The only positive was Nina, who worked hard and made our stay bearable despite everything wrong with the property.
