The hotel’s proximity to the Atlantic and Lafayette is a plus, but the first thing I saw was a man loudly shouting at the front desk through four‑inch bullet‑proof glass that he didn’t actually have a weapon, while the woman upstairs might. His nostrils were red and flared, and he was twitching like an electrified grasshopper. The clerk, who seemed used to such scenes, responded with indifference. We checked in reluctantly and went up to see our room. The elevator opened onto a floor that looked like a Rikers entrance: dingy floors, cold fluorescent lights, scuffed grey cement walls. The room had the same vibe. Within minutes we booked another room and left for the lobby to get a refund. The twitching man was still there, surrounded by five cops. For some reason the clerk was shocked when I asked to cancel and get my money back, asking why? I just pointed around. We were there for five minutes and he still charged me a $50 cancellation fee. I’d suggest spending the extra $100 so you can sleep soundly.
