A short history
The early history of Mahabaleshwar centers on the 13th-century Yadava dynasty, who constructed a temple at the source of five rivers. In 1656, Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the region and erected Pratapgad Fort nearby. General Lodwick surveyed the plateau in 1824, leading the British East India Company to establish it as a sanatorium and summer capital for the Bombay Presidency.
