Mysore served as the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore under the Wadiyar dynasty for nearly six centuries, interrupted briefly in the late 18th century when Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan seized power. Tipu Sultan shifted his seat to nearby Srirangapatna and resisted British expansion until his death in battle in 1799.
