Maharana Udai Singh II founded Udaipur in 1559 as the new capital of Mewar, prior to the fall of Chittorgarh Fort to Mughal forces in 1568. The surrounding Aravalli range offered natural protection against siege warfare. To secure water supply in the dry terrain, the Mewar rulers engineered interconnected artificial lakes using stone masonry dams. Udaipur preserved its independence through century-long resistance against Mughal authority before entering a treaty with the British in 1818.
