Ovenro Hotel Yala, Kataragama

The location is perfect—you can even walk to the temple. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious. However, there was confusion with the room booking. For four adults it asks you to book two rooms, but the property contacts you and says one room is sufficient for five people. Once you take one room, they only provide free breakfast for two people. There were a lot of mosquitoes in the room, and they don’t have mosquito nets or repellants, so I couldn’t sleep properly.

We booked a triple room that turned out to be spacious, clean, and comfortable, with plenty of room for our stay. The host was friendly, helpful, and welcoming, and the swimming pool was clean and well-maintained. The hotel sits right next to the Manik River, giving a peaceful, beautiful vibe and easy access to the river and surrounding nature. Overall, it was a very pleasant and comfortable stay, highly recommended. The only small drawback was that towels weren’t provided in the room, though I didn’t request them, so they might be available on request.

“Good”

Check‑out at 2 pm worked well with our pilgrimage schedule, especially since we checked in at 4 pm the day before. Most visitors to Kataragama are pilgrims, so this flexible timing was a welcome change from the usual arrival and departure times, letting us rest after the pilgrimage before heading back to Colombo. The only downside was that no food was available on site; the restaurant could only be used for outside food, and it would be great if the hotel could offer an option to order outside food so pilgrims can eat a decent meal after their return.
