“Prachtige locatie, goed onderkomen met goede voorzieningen. Fijne eigenaar. Heel prettig.”
The spot is gorgeous; Schmilka is a one‑street village with about 49 residents, and the Alte Schulte sits right at the top of the slope. In the late afternoon, even in October, the sun shines through the middle of the street, making it perfect for a beer on the sidewalk. The accommodation has one room with 10 beds, each with a lamp and two USB ports, a lockable wardrobe, a lock per wardrobe, a box of linens and a towel, and a duvet on the bed, plus extra blankets and towels. There’s a kettle with tea bags, a few cups, and some cutlery, but no microwave and no coffee maker. The room is a bit messy. There’s a foosball table, a washing machine, a dryer, and a piano. It’s not very cozy or stylish, but what do you expect for this price and all the other perks? There are two nice bathrooms with under‑floor heating, which is great. The owner, Robin, is a pleasant guy who swapped the Ruhr area for this spot about five years ago. Wi‑Fi works well. From the location you can start walking into the beautiful Elbsandsteingebirge right away; after an hour you’re at the most beautiful spots you can imagine. Even from the accommodation it’s already stunning. Across from the lodging is a small tent where you can get beer, coffee, soup, sausage, rolls, and more. The lady running the tent is very friendly. A little further down the street is a hotel with a slightly larger terrace and a modest selection of meals. Even further on the main road is another restaurant with a modest menu. There are no shops. I drove and could park for free on a private spot owned by Robin. The village is well reached by public transport, either by bus or by train and then a pontoon to the village. That pontoon also runs at very low water. In October the dormitory was fairly cold; the inverter air‑conditioner can’t warm it up. There are enough blankets to use. There’s a kind of sofa, actually a bed with a few cushions, that isn’t comfortable to sit on. So staying in the dormitory during the day isn’t very comfortable. There’s no shop in the village, so you have to go to Bad Schandau by bus if you don’t have a car or bike. That’s about 10 km further and costs about 3 € per single ticket.
