Kongo Sanmai is a beautiful temple. Staying there, witnessing the morning ceremony, and eating the monks’ vegan meals was a unique experience! I’m glad I did it. :)

It was my first time at a shukubo, and I got to join the morning service, see the main deity, and learn about a slice of Japanese tradition—what a great experience! The quiet early‑morning temple felt refreshing. The shojin ryori was delicious, beautifully presented, healthy, and left me completely satisfied! Thank you.

We loved this temple stay!!! The temple itself was amazing and interesting to visit. It features the oldest pagoda in Koyasan, as well as a very spiritual, immersive atmosphere. The lady who welcomed us was amazing, she could speak Japanese, English, Italian and Spanish and instructed us about everything. The dinner and breakfast were delicious. The onsen were great as well. The room was very big, and the traditional furniture was incredible. The veranda was amazing as well. We would have loved to stay longer, it was an amazing experience, we are truly grateful to have lived through it!

The temple is gorgeous and the staff are very helpful and friendly, making the whole visit very pleasant. The communal bath was excellent, and because the guesthouse is separate from the temple, there was no closing hour. The futons were very thin, and showering in the morning wasn’t possible.

The atmosphere was nice. The hard futon with a cherry‑pit head pillow felt very Spartan.
