I’ve stayed here before, but this time the place had deteriorated. No front‑desk staff were present when I arrived, so I had to call the hotel while standing outside the check‑in area just to let them know I was there. I discovered there was only one person on duty for the entire hotel, juggling check‑ins, customer issues, general maintenance, and bartending. When I went to the bar to plan dinner, I found out they no longer serve food (except breakfast). The bar area had become a playground for rude teenagers who weren’t even hotel guests, demanding soda refills and being loud, obnoxious, and disrespectful. On the bright side, breakfast was available, though it was very limited.

Hotel Grinnell is a boutique hotel in a quiet city, very walkable with a nearby park for easy dog walks. It’s a renovated middle school with wide hallways, unique common spaces, high ceilings, and comfortable rooms. We understood there would be food on‑site, but the only option was charcuterie, which wasn’t enough after an 11‑hour drive.

The location was good. However, the windows couldn’t be opened, and the air‑conditioner was so loud it made sleeping impossible. I could hear everything happening in the neighboring room and in the hallway. The breakfast couldn’t be called a 4‑star hotel breakfast.

I’ve stayed here before, and it’s a no‑brainer in Grinnell. The concept is totally cool. What I didn’t like was how hands‑off it felt. I know a new F&B partnership is underway, which should bring more excitement, but the traditional services I expected were completely missing this time.
