“Fab food with a glorious restaurant view”
Friends had told us the food was great, and we were not disappointed; dinner and breakfast were first class, and the view while eating was wonderful.
“Dissapointed More Than Happy!”
This 300‑year‑old inn sits in a beautiful part of Northumberland, and the views from the beer garden are lovely—on a sunny day it's a pleasure to sit outside and enjoy them. There are some lovely walks right on the doorstep. The full English breakfast is large and well cooked, and there’s a selection of cereals, fruit juices, and yogurt. The staff are friendly, especially Charles, who is an asset to the establishment. Unfortunately, the inn is extremely tired and urgently needs refurbishment. The carpets are dirty, and in some places sticky, and frankly need replacing. When using the electric shower in room 3, it feels like a helicopter is trying to land in your room because it is that noisy, and the water pressure is poor. As expected for a 300‑year‑old inn, there are creaks in the floorboards, especially in the bathroom of room 3. The beer garden, which should be a major feature, also needs some TLC: the wooden bench tables are old and in some cases rotten, and dying or dead shrubs and plants detract from the area. From conversations with locals and staff it seems the owners have focused on the restaurant—food is good with a ridiculously large menu—while neglecting the rest of the business. The inn was taken over by new owners only last month, so the usual teething issues appear, such as supply problems. For example, we were told after ordering that there was no pasta at all, and several other menu items were also “not available.” In a 300‑year‑old inn, you would expect several real ales on hand pumps, but there was only one—a local bitter that didn’t appeal to me. The couple of nights away were a surprise for my wife, but she was disappointed by the first thing she saw: a dirty old mattress against the wall outside the entrance, followed by the old and dirty carpets throughout. All in all, this could (and should) be an excellent place for a short break—a character‑building spot in a lovely little hamlet in beautiful Northumberland—but it currently disappoints for all the reasons mentioned above.
“Cheap but needs improvements.”
The staff were friendly and professional, the bedroom and bathroom were a good size, but the bathroom door handle was very stiff and hard to open from either side, and there was no thermostat on the bathroom radiator so it didn’t heat up; food at dinner and breakfast was average, and all the eggs at breakfast were overcooked whether fried, poached, or scrambled.
The room was nice, the staff were friendly, and the bar menu was good, but the fan extractor in the bathroom was very noisy.
