After a seven‑hour drive I found myself staring at a locked door; no one answered the bell, the horn, or the phone, and my messages on Booking went unanswered.

The lodge overlooks a forested garden where the natural sounds are soothing, the rooms are cozy, and breakfast is good; Fernando and German go out of their way to make guests feel welcome, with German acting as a guide to his brother Nelson’s organic cacao plantation and to a nearby waterfall teeming with colorful butterflies.

The bungalow in the forest offers great peace; the power went out, but that was a village‑wide outage caused by heavy rain, not the lodge’s fault.
