Staying in a traditional-style guest house in such a prime spot was lovely, yet the heatwave made it hard to be comfortable anywhere but in the main tatami room, as the rest of the house had no air conditioning.

It was a wonderful, unique stay.

The host, who is a painter, was super nice and gave me a free poster of his work, plus instant noodles when all the restaurants were closed upon my arrival. The room was very spacious, well equipped, and offered a nice view of the garden. The only downside is that newer towels could be provided.

1. This Edo-period house exudes charm, and the traditional garden was so calming that we cooked and ate on the porch every day, feeling regenerated and recharged. 2. The facility is fully equipped for cooking a complete meal, letting us experiment with local ingredients and create something new, which was fun. 3. The host was friendly and did his best to help; he lent us umbrellas, but unfortunately we left one behind in a shop and when we asked to reimburse him, he refused, saying it was an old umbrella. 4. The location is central to everything, making it convenient for the Arita ceramics festival, but because the main road is blocked for pedestrian walking, you must walk 10–15 minutes to the accommodation, and taxis cannot drive on the main road from 0900 to 1700. 1. I wish the host had told us to get off at Kami-Arita Station, which is a closer walk to the house; since we were unfamiliar with the town, we got off at Arita and walked to the accommodation, wasting time and energy. 2. The host informed us the road would close after 0930, so we arrived at Arita Station at 0905, only to find the road already closed; we ended up taking a local shuttle bus for 500 yen/person to the nearest point on the main street, then walking 15 minutes with all our luggage to the accommodation. It would be better if we knew the road closed at 0900 instead of 0930. 3. This is a traditional Japanese house, so guests who prefer a bit of chill should bring long-sleeve shirts; this is not a fault of the accommodation but a heads‑up for first‑time visitors. 4. Also, most shops and restaurants in Arita close after 5 pm, so you either eat earlier or cook your own meals; the town is quiet, which is good for relaxing and recharging.
