The beds were comfortable, and they offered free tea and coffee. I paid £54 for a single room with a shared bathroom and shower. The shower’s water pressure was very weak and the temperature kept fluctuating between hot and cold. There was no hook or any place to hang a wet shower towel, let alone a jacket. The room itself was very cold and drafty (the hotel is an old building and it was a chilly 5 °C day in October). The radiator was off and couldn’t be turned on. There were no reception staff on site (key collection was automated), so after a slow chat with a staff member on WhatsApp, a portable heater was sent to me about three hours later, for which I was grateful.

The place offers great value for money, stays quiet and is far enough from any busy area yet close enough to explore a vast region. The bed is very clean and fresh. It’s perfect for a short break or for dogs working nearby. It delivered on every promise. As a heating engineer, I noticed the radiators might need a little attention—perhaps they need bleeding or draining of sludge because the heat didn’t reach the optimal temperature, though it was still comfortable for me. For the winter season, I’d check them and the boiler pressure, and if the radiators need bleeding, remember to top the pressure up accordingly.

The room was clean, warm, and spacious, featuring a lovely large bathroom with a separate bath and shower. The online check‑in process was stressful, and extra pillows would have been nice.

AWFUL PLACE. AVOID!!! Columba House is NOT a running hotel. It has not been a hotel for several years but instead has a few very basic rooms that are rented out. There are no staff on site other than one very rude, very odd, male housekeeping person who speaks little English, is very intimidating, and displays serious mental health antisocial behaviour towards guests he encounters. The former hotel is an active building site. It is old, soulless, tired, and unloved. The day before check‑in, guests receive a text message with a pin code to collect the key from a key safe in an unmanned area just inside the building, and for the remainder of the stay you may have the misfortune of seeing a very rude, very odd, and quite menacing male carrying toilet rolls. Other than that, there are no hotel staff on site. No hotel facilities, no food or drinks—it is simply a rent‑a‑room and off you go, ghost building. During the week we stayed, no change of towels were provided, the room was not cleaned or hoovered, bins were not emptied, but toilet roll was miraculously provided twice. It really should be shut down with health and safety inspectors brought in immediately. So many people arrived during the week and left after one night. Read ALL the reviews and avoid at all costs.
