We were lucky to get upgraded to the suite, which was absolutely gorgeous; as frequent hotel guests, this was without doubt one of the loveliest places we’ve stayed at, and we’ll be back soon.

The building looked nice from the outside and some staff were competent. When we arrived, the receptionist told us that because we were part of a wedding party, we wouldn’t be charged for breakfast, just as my niece, who was getting married, had said. At checkout they claimed we had misunderstood and that we would have to pay an extra £60.00 for two days of breakfast. Everyone in the party had to pay for breakfast, so they made a killing on us. My sister’s bill said Bed and Breakfast—doesn’t that mean the room price includes breakfast? Now about the room: the heating was off, so the first night was cold. The second night they cranked the heat up to full blast and there was no control in the room. To boil tea you have to crawl under the table to plug it in, and the kettle cable is barely long enough. The TV is tiny unless you sit six feet away, so you can’t watch it in bed. In the bathroom, next to the sink there is no towel rail and barely enough shelf space for toiletries. To get warm water in the shower you have to hit and miss with the mixer; the cold water never came out, so it was scorching hot. I couldn’t find a phone in the room to call reception. I know they’ll deny all these points, but stay here at your peril. You have been warned.

The location is lovely and the staff friendly, but the rooms are tired, the room we booked wasn’t provided and we had to request a correction, and there was no balcony for our celebration. It’s very dated; a coat of paint and a tidy up would help. The old fixtures and fittings are very old and dated; an old hotel can carry it off with tight care, but not this one.

The rooms feel nice and comfy, and the staff are friendly. Breakfast wasn’t all freshly cooked.
