How guests rate the property, aspect by aspect.
The staff were very kind. The old‑school ryokan had a nostalgic style that made enjoying Japanese culture a pleasure. The white rice, Hida beef, and miso soup were tasty. The food was mostly pre‑made, and even though the selection was small, I’d have liked more handmade options. The AC didn’t work well. I’d have liked a different drink in the room. I don’t think the room with the hearth near the entrance is needed. The whole building felt too dark, which bothered me.

Delicious food, a more authentic and not luxurious ryokan experience. Note that the place is far from Takayama city centre, requiring a bus that takes about 1 h. We didn’t like that people started tidying the dining hall and breakfast while you were still eating. So it’s better to always choose the first available time.

The onsen facilities were quite good. Breakfast was good and varied daily. The room was spacious. The room’s air conditioning worked well. It’s very close to the bus stop for Shinhotaka or Hirayu Onsen. The toilet and sink hadn’t been cleaned properly, and overall parts of the room looked run down and dated. The futons seemed old and firm. There was no exhaust in the toilet, so bad smells built up quickly. The whole property often smelled of smoking. The website photos were a bit misleading about the ryokan’s atmosphere—it’s currently plastered with anime/manga character exhibits, which surprised us! It was also unclear from the property description that there are no private shower facilities at all, i.e. the only shower is in the public onsen area. I would advise making this especially clear to foreign travellers!

The half‑board and the associated times were perfect for hiking days. Access to the onsen after the effort was enjoyable, as was the welcome from the owners. The value for money might be a bit high compared to other ryokans we stayed at during the trip.

Excellent meals—both breakfast and dinner—and very friendly staff; love the onsen! I didn’t realize we didn’t have a private shower room, so that was a surprise!
