Kokuan is practically next to Daizai‑Fuku‑Tenmangu, almost like a garden across the street. Room 102 shares a building with the check‑in and dining area, making it very convenient yet quiet at night. The room and bathroom are spacious, and the hinoki scent from the bath is pleasant. However, Room 102 lacks a proper door between the wash basin and the toilet seat, and because the bathroom door is transparent, the mirror lets you see someone using the toilet. This room suits people who don’t mind seeing a roommate’s nudity.

The hospitality was wonderful and comfortable; both morning and evening meals were tasty, especially the locally‑based breakfast set, which I was very satisfied with after a night of French cuisine. The coffee was good, and room 102 offered a calm atmosphere. The only downside was the limited selection of wine and local beer; more options would have made it even better, though the drinks provided were all fine. If there had been more varieties of Kyushu shochu or whisky, I might have chosen something else, but that may be too much to expect.

Reception Ladies und Frühstück. Es ist nicht erkennbar, dass die Zimmer nicht im Hotel sind und der Blick auf einen Parkplatz geht. Gefragt nach einem Zimmerwechsel und dem enorm hohen Preis antwortete der Manager, man solle eben nicht über booking buchen. Besser abreisen als Urlaub dort

I enjoyed the rare experience of dining inside a historic cultural site. In the hallway of the room, I could sense outside noise and people’s presence, especially at night, which was a bit unsettling.

“War alles ok aber eine Nacht reicht!”

I was disappointed that we only received a breakfast box with toast the night before, which was inedible the next morning. We had a taxi at 7:00, but given the price I expected a discount or a better breakfast. The room was on a side street, not the main building, which I didn’t like; I had hoped for something nicer. The staff were very friendly, dinner was excellent, and the place is sweet, but one day isn’t enough.
