“In Mount Lavinia, Tropic Inn ticks all the boxes”
The exterior looked neat and modern, the foyer was well organized, and the lift and stairs worked perfectly. I stayed two nights, then returned for another two because I liked it so much. The room was spacious with plenty of storage, the double bed was very comfortable, and it was fully air‑conditioned. There were many sockets and lights so I could adjust the lighting myself. The bathroom was clean and very modern, with a walk‑in shower that had great water pressure and hot water. The fridge was unnecessary, but I didn’t use it. I had breakfast twice for Rs 1500 each time, enjoying traditional Sri Lankan fare that felt like home and was plentiful. The location is excellent, less than 100 metres from the beach and the main beach restaurants. I had stayed at this hotel several years ago when it was still a backpacker spot, but it has since been upgraded to a high‑standard hotel with all the amenities at a very affordable price. I loved all the staff who were attentive yet unobtrusive, especially Thuan and the other manager who were extremely helpful with key information, payments, and storing my luggage while I took a short trip to Trincomalee. The hotel is about a 20‑minute walk from Mount Lavinia railway station, where you can catch the early‑morning express train to Jaffna and beyond, as well as commuter trains to Colombo Fort, the central hub for trains to all destinations. Tropic Inn is where I will stay every time I visit Sri Lanka in the future. I highly recommend it to solo travellers and families alike. Thank you to everyone at the hotel for making my stay one of my fondest memories!
