“Preis-Leistungsverhältnis passt nicht!”

The location was great! The room was incredibly Spartan and bland, but at least clean and quiet. The bed was okay. Check‑in was trouble‑free at the reception 100 m away from the Augustiner Kloster. Good internet and there was YouTube. That was it. I have never slept in such a Spartan, bland, and dark room like the guest house Nicolai, which is attached to the Augustiner Kloster. One could argue the room was functional, but the value for money here simply doesn't match! A price of 70 EUR per night would be appropriate, but 110 EUR (without breakfast) is just too much! On top of that there's an obscure cultural promotion fee of 5,50 EUR per night. By Spartan I mean the room didn't even have a toothbrush holder or a glass. There was also no way to make coffee or tea in the room. I also expected that for 110 EUR at least a bottle of mineral water would be placed for me at the welcome. We still have summer. All small things but not tolerable for the price.

“Der Aufenthalt im Gästehaus Nikolai ist sehr zu empfehlen.”

Breakfast was good and varied. The location from the guest house Nikolai to the centre – we were at the Domstufenfestival – was excellent. Domplatz is within a 10‑minute walk.

The location right by the Franziskanerkloster with a view of the Gera stream is perfect, and breakfast at the Franziskanerkloster is decent. Fun fact: Martin Luther once lived here. Walking to the city center, especially the Domplatz, takes no more than 10 minutes. Parking on the guesthouse grounds costs 15 EUR, which is steep, but a free “wild parking” spot is just 100 m away.

The place was very central yet surprisingly quiet. It was extremely hot during our stay, and we would have liked a fan.

We skipped breakfast, but the guesthouse’s location was fantastic. Arriving was a bit stressful because the train was delayed and we missed the mandatory 18.00 h check‑in; after a tricky phone call the receptionist (thanks!) agreed to wait an extra half hour, otherwise we would have lost the room. That policy is mentioned beforehand, yet you really have to factor it in since there’s no key box or anything similar.
