If you’re after something authentic, this is the place to go; if you want a cookie‑cutter experience, look elsewhere. Hessel, the host, is super friendly and, since I was the only guest for two nights, he happily talked about his 12 years running the hostel and reviving the buildings. It’s an excellent base for exploring Lysefjord, just make sure you plan your ferry times. The only downside was that, if all 15+ beds had been occupied in the historic house I stayed in, the single toilet and shower would have been inconvenient. Also, it’s a 150 m ascent to the house, so if you have heavy luggage you’ll notice it.

An incredible, atmospheric place. A very interesting historic property, well maintained. Everything needed is accessible, especially the shoe dryer. Spotless. Delicious meals at the restaurant.

The location, fjord view, cleanliness, stylish furniture and other facilities and details (sinks, shower) – comfortable beds. We only slept one night, so we didn’t get to enjoy the beautiful accommodation fully.
