I paid a few extra dollars for a single room, barely larger than a dormitory box but tiled, clean, with a minimal but adequate bathroom, a window where a light breeze from the 17th floor let me avoid the AC and fan that were present. In that famous underground market of Chunking Mansion you find China and India, and friendly Philippines for breakfasts, and everyone seems to get along. The location is perfect, at the end of Kowloon, a stone’s throw from the bay. You have to tolerate narrow corridors, closeness, the basement without natural light but you just pass through it and find everything. Don’t take the wrong elevator or you won’t find your room. Bonus: the prices, for Hong Kong, are unbeatable.

First of all while checking in I was told I need to pay 50 HKD key deposit in cash which will be returned upon check out. I did not agree to pay as didn’t have any cash plus during the booking there was no information about extra charges. Lady at reception wasn’t happy but didn’t push much as there was nothing she could do. Secondly room was not what the pictures are advertising on booking. com. Bed linen was dirty, there was no towels, not even toilet paper and I found cockroaches walking on the walls, floor and my bed, there is no safe deposit box in the room, wall are extremely thin so you hear everybody, even person using bathroom or taking shower next door. I spoke with receptionist and showed her pictures. She told me they are full so I cannot change the room but I can pack myself and wait in the corridor and somebody will come and clean the room one more time. I was waiting 15 mins for somebody to come and change the bed sheet ( new one also was stained but I gave up at this point) I had to ask for toilet paper and towel as was missing also. Overall the pictures on booking and room in reality are 2 different places. Overall I do not recommend and will never stay again

The room was clean, but the building’s entrance and access were problematic; there was no lock or access card, so anyone could just take the lift and walk into a room.

There wasn’t much to say positively; the hostel felt like a cramped underground tunnel.
