I’m not sure what to like here. My room had a bathroom, which is a plus, and the curtains were hanging off—when I told the owner, they sent someone right away to fix it, which was good. It felt like an HMO turned into a hotel, the building looked rough, and for the first time in many years I didn’t feel safe, so I wedged a table behind my door.

Staying at Shirley House was a pleasure; everything I needed was there and more. The hosts were kind and helpful, and it was very calm at night, though sometimes the neighbourhood was noisy early in the morning.

The lowest price I saw at the moment, but the room was just a double bed, no fridge, no microwave, and every amenity – kitchen and bathroom – was shared. It works for a one‑night stop but not for a longer stay. The bathroom and kitchen were shared, the bedroom was too small and the fittings were old. The building had at least six rooms, needed repainting, and the overall appeal was low. It was at least 2 km from the rail station.
