We stayed at a very cozy camp at the foot of Kilimanjaro, where a clear sky gave us a great view of the volcano; we spent two nights there, including New Year’s under a bright moon, and the setting felt very romantic and quiet. Each tent had a little sitting area right before the entrance for a peaceful evening after safari, and the camp centre offered a fire pit that was also nice for winding down. The showers and toilets were outdoors in enclosed cabins with hot water available, and there was a restaurant on site where lunch or dinner cost $20, while breakfast was included. The park gate at Amboseli is 5 km away, and you can drive yourself or book guided safaris—we drove ourselves. After a safari we punctured a tyre and the camp staff helped with tools and the replacement. The camp sits in a field far from the road, so finding it isn’t easy; the coordinates are -2.587992, 37.356503 and the turn‑off is at -2.59882, 37.362152. The road from the highway to the camp is 19 km of very poor condition, forcing speeds of only 5‑10 km/h.
