The place was very clean and new. Julia was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The Uber driver dropped us off at Main Street, but we couldn’t call reception and had to haul two heavy bags up the stairs to the entrance. They should have warned us to be dropped off on the side road instead of the main road.

The location was very good, near the port and the old city, within walking distance of port facilities, fish market, green market, restaurants, and the old city was pleasant and charming. The hotel sits right on a corner of a main road leading to the city centre, and the curves attract enthusiastic motorcyclists and sports‑car drivers with modified mufflers who seem to think they’re in a Grand Prix all day and night. Villa Scalaria doesn’t provide breakfast, but they negotiated a 10 % discount with Hotel Ambassador across the street for a buffet that looked excellent. However, 80 € for breakfast for two is somewhat pricey and, if you’re Canadian, exorbitant. The receptionist seemed suspicious of the discount coupon and treated us like we were persona non grata.
