“Hjælpsom personale, - det var så det.”
It takes 30 minutes on foot to the charming town centre, where there are good shopping and dining options. A 10‑minute walk leads to a lovely park along the Thames; the mattress was a bit soft/hard for us. I could make tea and coffee in the room. The staff were always smiling and chatty, and they tried to find a room with a window that could open, but that didn’t work. I could always ask for tea, coffee, and milk, and they would bring it in about two minutes. The view was good, but the windows were closed. There was no way to open the windows or balcony doors because they were nailed shut, supposedly to keep animals and insects from the Thames in. The room felt very enclosed, though air‑conditioning could be turned on. The neighboring hotel’s balcony faced the Thames, which we could have used. The building was old and worn: uneven floors with sudden holes, wavy carpet, and a lot of noise—everything in the hotel could be heard, like lights turning on and off, the faucet running, and toilet flushing. Light from the hallway seeped in through the door all night (a towel could cover it). The bathroom was dirty, with hair in the tub and a few dead insects in the carpet. Dust fell from the ceiling. The pillow was flat and felt like a board.
