“Skip the tourist traps, and go for a true Amazon Rainforest experience, you won't be disappointed .”
From the moment we landed in Puerto Maldonado, we dropped our extra luggage at the office and then hit the road for about 1.5 hours to Valencia Lake Lodge; the staff, Geampier and his girlfriend Alexandra, were amazing and took care of us the whole time, with kayaking, piranha fishing, sunset beer on the lake, night hikes, and a Brazil nut trail that was really fascinating – a true Amazon Rainforest adventure with excellent food, and we’ll remember it forever. The only downside is that the rustic setting means you should expect a rough experience.
This lodge is truly special: besides the lodge itself, the only other place nearby is a tiny village of 35 people, so you’re basically alone in the jungle. The accommodation is beautiful and luxurious for the jungle, but don’t expect air‑conditioning. The family is incredibly kind and speaks good English, the tours are great, the Wi‑Fi works well, and power comes from a solar system.
“Authentisches Dschungelerlebnis”
Valencia Lake Lodge is run as a family business, which shows in many ways: the mother cooks delicious Peruvian food with jungle and regional ingredients, the daughters handle organization and tours, and Toni is the go‑to for everything. We felt completely comfortable and taken care of, and we were lucky to be there during the rainy season when the nights were mostly clear, which was wonderful for sleeping. The beds in the lodges are very comfortable, but you should expect a genuine, authentic experience with constant animal sounds—birds, monkeys, insects, even at night—and sometimes insects visit the bungalow, which didn’t bother us because it’s unavoidable. The bungalow is modern and spacious. We didn’t book the full package but picked activities like kayaking, night hiking, piranha fishing, and caiman watching, all top‑organized, and the guide Diego knows the flora and fauna inside and out, with impressive spotting skills. Because the family opened the lodge recently, you can only pay in cash right now, though a card reader will be added soon. The lodge is about 1.5 hours by car from Puerto Maldonado, so we booked a transfer and it worked wonderfully.
“Wonderful rustic experience and amazing staff!”
This place has a lot to like: the bungalows are screened but still feel open‑air, the beds are comfy, fans and mosquito coils were supplied, the food was great even though we couldn’t pick meals, and we saw monkeys, macaws, a sloth, a peccary, bullet ants, a caiman, and even fished for piranhas – all the reasons we came. It’s remote, so choices are limited, but they had everything we needed, plus Wi‑Fi and power all night, which was a pleasant surprise. The family‑run staff were friendly and spoke good English, and Jeanpier was knowledgeable and flexible with our excursions. The only complaint is that there’s no hot water, which was uncomfortable after a hot day, but they only use solar power, so that makes sense.
“Muy linda experiencia!”
The location and scenery are very pretty, the activities are fun, and the staff are very friendly.
