The welcome was excellent, the staff very friendly, the old‑style hotel had a lovely vibe at the bar in the evenings, the bedding was very comfortable, parking was close to the property, and the airport was nearby.

The price was low and the spot gave a nice view over the town, plus the old building felt cozy. But the bar downstairs kept the noise up until 2 am, so the hotel even put earplugs by the bed, which shows they’re aware. Still, the local vibe was authentic. Breakfast was the lamest setup I’ve seen—no fresh items, only instant coffee, basic cereal and toast, and they forgot butter. You really get what you pay for.

The bar staff and breakfast crew were very friendly and helpful with local info, and the location was perfect for visiting nearby sites. It’s great to stay in an old Victorian hotel with period features on the high street, close to shops and cafés—Forres itself was lovely. The downside was the ensuite shower was mouldy and needed a thorough clean; my wife wanted to buy antibacterial cleaner at the co‑op, but we were on a weekend break and a few basics would have made a big difference.

I had a quiet and comfortable night at the Carlton, with a spacious twin room that let in plenty of light and offered a lovely view over Forres rooftops. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the continental breakfast was good. The only issue was the shower in the shared bathroom on the 3rd floor was out of order, so I had to go downstairs for a shower in the morning.
