The room was big with a safe, the AC worked well and the Wi‑Fi was good. The hotel was very clean and the staff were friendly. They changed the beach towels every day, which was a real plus. We could easily spot pretty fish, turtles and rays. The corals had lost a lot of colour, but the hotel protects them with no‑go buoys. The gardens were beautiful and well kept. We liked having a shower room to freshen up before heading to the airport. The hotel itself is decent, but Makadi beach feels like a string of luxury hotels. There’s a souk, a supermarket, shops, pharmacies – it feels like a city, but it’s just a set‑up. Guards control the zone entrance and the only Egyptians you see are hotel workers. There’s nothing to do on your own. The buffets were huge and that weighed on my decision, but I was disappointed. The desserts were always the same, the fruit (except dates) had no flavour – it was almost unbelievable. The meats were overcooked and reused the next day for sauces, and the crudités ended up in salads. That’s common elsewhere, but here it was striking. The vegetable variety was poor; steamed veg, rice or potatoes were offered in three different preparations. You could eat in other hotel restaurants, but we wanted to dine at the Oriental. It was the same as the buffet. We saw servers going up and down with plates. No point, plus the service was very slow. The local spirits were included but not interesting.

Everything was excellent, the food varied and amazing, the staff were great—especially Mr Mahmoud at reception who upgraded our rooms for free and Mr Waleed in the restaurant, plus the head chef who was always in the dining room ensuring everything ran smoothly. The beach was nice with a coral reef, the daily entertainment program was great, and access to the aqua park was also superb.
