“A gem in the heart of Bath but......”
The Black Fox is a great place to stay, right in the heart of Bath and a short walk to the centre. The reception sits in the main pub/bar area and we were greeted warmly by Olivia, and all the staff were friendly and very helpful throughout our stay. The outside of the property is attractive and inviting. The room we had was very clean, the bed extremely comfortable. Kettle, radio and TV are provided, as are hand soap and shower gel. The walk‑in shower was lovely! The room fan was very welcome as the weather was still quite warm during our stay. The food was so good that we ate there both nights of our stay! Choices for breakfast were good, everything from smoked salmon to fruit and yoghurt; great coffee! The “Small Plates” option on the evening menu is such a good idea, and perfect for a sharing option. The “beer flight”, a choice of 3 local beers/ales in 1/3 of a pint glasses was a novel and great idea. They make a perfect Aperol Spritz! Although our room was over the bar, we were not disturbed by other customers, and the Black Fox is a very popular place, and rightly so. The Black Fox is a beautiful, old building and, therefore, the accommodation is NOT suitable for anyone with mobility issues. There is NO lift. We requested a first floor room but were put on the second floor, 4 flights of stairs up. All the rooms are up at least two flights of stairs and there is a bannister on one side only. The floors are uneven, and there are trip hazards everywhere, and these are not highlighted. In the bar/pub, the toilets are situated down a flight of stairs, again difficult if you have mobility problems. This is the only reason why we wouldn't stay at the Black Fox again, which is a real shame. In order to access the accommodation, you have to leave reception, go back outside, and access a different entrance around the corner, again, not ideal if you have mobility issues. Help was offered by the staff in reception however. The room facilities were fine but the hanging space for clothes was placed in the window which was a bit odd, and there was nowhere to hang wet towels etc from the bathroom. Despite the huge mirror leant again the bedroom wall, a pedestal mirror on the dressing table would have been a really helpful addition.
