We liked the location and the beds were comfortable, and tea and coffee were supplied. There was a lift. The staff were miserable from the start; we almost walked away at check‑in because there was no welcome or smile. The first impression inside looked modern but was very tired, especially our room. The bathroom door didn’t shut, the toilet took several flushes to clear, and the shower over the bath had a curtain that had to cover the taps to stop water from spilling onto the floor, making the taps hard to reach; the curtain stuck to us. Our TV was unwatchable and we missed our favourite programmes. Outside our room, cables littered the area, giving the impression that the place wasn’t well maintained. Repairs had been started but were unfinished to an acceptable standard, and the lounge bar chairs needed cleaning. Overall, the décor required a refresh in some areas. We left one night early. We overheard a conversation about an argument with another guest over damage to a wall in his room; he had repaired it with polyfilla, but the hotel charged him an extra night to pay for the fix and painting. I don’t know the full story, but if accurate, that seems unfair since accidents happen. The hotel next door is lovely; they are sister hotels. They offered us a room there, gave us tea and toast, and the carvery at the sister hotel is lovely.
