Jeff was awesome, but I learned the hard way that taxis aren’t available from Togari Nozawa Onsen train station—best to catch the bus from Iiyama station instead.

I couldn’t reach any staff for two hours after arriving at the lodge, even though I’d spoken with the manager the day before; he was very helpful in escorting me to the train station. I decided to cut my trip short and leave. There was no one answering the phone, and the messages they claimed to send never arrived. The lodge is not professionally run; no one manned the reception desk. The cleaners or helpers seemed like ski bums who worked so fast they could afford to ski. The bathrooms were communal—no private bathroom in the room, a fact that was never mentioned when I booked.
