Wildlife Kingdom - Deniyaya Sinharaja

We stayed at Wildlife Kingdom and had an excellent stay; Hemal and his family were great hosts, the rooms were comfortable with good views, the food was excellent with generous portions, and the night and morning tours with Hemal to the rainforest were highlights—seeing hump‑nosed lizards, vine snakes, scorpions, frogs, emerald doves, grey hornbills, Malabar trogon and more, plus a walk to a beautiful waterfall; we appreciated the time Hemal spent spotting wildlife and his immense knowledge; the road to the accommodation is a little rough but manageable.

Absolutely loved our stay here! From the very beginning to the very end, everything was amazing, and we would highly recommend staying with Hemal and his family. Hemal is one of those people who genuinely goes the extra mile to make sure you’re happy and comfortable. He’s always paying attention to the little things and trying to help with whatever you need. We’re really into wildlife and birds, and whenever he spotted a bird, he would point it out to us, and when my partner was hoping to see a particular snake, Hemal went looking for it and later let us know that he had found one. Those little details really made our stay feel special. The accommodation itself is lovely. The room was spotless, comfortable and had everything we needed, plus our own little balcony where we could enjoy the incredible views. There’s also a beautiful shared terrace, very nicely decorated, with completely open views over the surrounding greenery, trees and fields. If you’re a bird lover, this is honestly an amazing place to stay. You can sit there for half an hour and see so many different species without even having to leave the property. And the food deserves a special mention because it was fantastic. Hemal’s wife is an amazing cook, and we really enjoyed every meal we had there. They have a great variety of dishes on the menu, which is especially nice if you’re staying for several days. I also tried kottu for the first time in Sri Lanka here, and it absolutely lived up to the hype! The breakfast was also delicious and clearly made with a lot of care. You can really tell how much effort the whole family puts into making you feel welcome. We also did a wildlife and bird tour with Hemal, and it was one of the highlights of our stay. I really wanted to see a particular bird, and he simply wouldn’t give up until we found it, and we did! On top of that, we saw loads of other birds and animals, including some snakes that my partner was hoping to see

Das Beste an dieser Unterkunft ist die Terrasse. Von hier hat man einen tollen Ausblick und kann wunderbar Vögel, wie z.B. Pfauen, beobachten. Vorab wurden mir per WhatsApp schon Infos zu möglichen Touren und dem Essensangebot zugeschickt. Das war sehr praktisch. Es ist eine sympathische, junge Familie, die diese Unterkunft betreibt. Leider war nicht alles super. Der Besitzer - seinen Namen hat er uns nie genannt - ist sehr kundig was die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt angeht. Er kann viele Tiere sogar in verschiedenen Sprachen benennen. Wenn es in die Natur geht, ist er in seinem Element. Er sollte aber an seinen Fähigkeiten als Gastgeber arbeiten. Wir hätten uns deutlich mehr Kommunikation gewünscht. Das fing schon bei einem fehlenden "Guten Morgen" an, obwohl wir die einzigen Gäste waren. Auf Nachrichten in WhatsApp wurde oft nicht reagiert. In der ersten Nacht hatten wir Ameisen im Bett. Erst auf mehrfache Nachfrage und Bitte konnten wir für die Nacht das Zimmer wechseln. Häufiger waren wir verunsichert oder ratlos, weil auf Aussagen oder Situationen keine Reaktion kam. Im Vergleich zur sonst üblichen Herzlichkeit und Gastfreundlichkeit in Sri Lanka war das hier eine sehr untypische Erfahrung

“Really enjoyed sharing my breakfast with the squirrels 💚”

The bedroom and en‑suite were beautifully finished, and the bed was extremely comfortable—definitely the best pillows I’ve had in over a month of traveling. Waking up to peacocks in the front field was a delight. The owners welcomed us warmly and took us on a 14 km rainforest walk, where he skillfully spotted wildlife along the trail.
