“Lovely, friendly Matlock, we'll be back.”
Everyone on staff was welcoming and the location was solid, but the constant security lighting at night meant I’d need blackout blinds or curtains.

The room, vibe, and staff were all excellent, so I’d recommend it without hesitation.

Breakfast was decent, but there was no variety in the cooked options; the pub itself has charm, but the rooms need work and could become great with a bit of effort. The bedroom had plenty of sockets. Cleanliness was a major issue: the bathroom had urine around the toilet base, the basin light was dead, the mixer tap was loose and hard to shut off, and tiles around the bath were cracked; black mould appeared around the basin and bath taps, and red goo was on the back of the door, which I had to wipe. Walls had dirty finger marks. The bathroom door lintel was too low for anyone over 6’. In the bedroom, some surfaces weren’t clean and toys in the adjoining children’s room had obvious food residue on them. Only one tea bag was provided, though there were plenty of coffee sachets and milk pots, so I brought my own. The bed was a double even though a king could fit; the mattress was so uncomfortable that we had to layer the bunk bed duvets under the sheet, and there were no mattress or pillow protectors. The bedroom mirror’s placement left too little light for makeup. With a little effort, the accommodation could reach five stars.

The place was tiny, dirty, and the electrical sockets were broken; there was no wardrobe, and the staff and management ignored us and offered no apology, so I wouldn’t stay there again. When I asked the manager for a different room because there were no wardrobes, he replied, “What do you expect? It’s a pigsty, that’s what they used to be.”
