I didn’t get a single bite of breakfast, only a half roll of toilet paper, two towels, and a washcloth. The soap was so tiny I couldn’t find it after dropping it under my chest. The front desk clerk spoke little English and couldn’t locate our reservation, so she had to call her son to sort it out. I was charged $20 for a service dog, and there was no ice machine—definitely a terrible place.

I helped my sister move from Mexico to Oregon, and we stopped at Mom and Pops hotels and motels along the way; each day we were exhausted from battling the wind, which I didn’t realize was so gusty up here. I booked a two‑bed, no‑smoking room but ended up in a smoking, two‑bed room. The AC didn’t work, so they gave us a fan to circulate the hot air. The carpet was filthy, and the towels were dingy. If the rate wasn’t non‑refundable, we would have left and found another spot.

The room was cheap enough for a one‑night stay, just a couple of blocks from the interstate exit. It was basic, no frills, convenient but not a palace.
