“Great view of volcano from roof”

Room good, view of volcano from rooftop probably the highlight. Kettle provided in room. Arrange transport ahead of time (e.g. with Joe at reception) as we struggled to find a grab to the waterfall in the morning. Wound up asking randoms at the petrol station and some nice locals gave us a lift

“Would give this hostel a pass : unclean bathroom, thin walls and unfinished repairs”

The only good point were the breakfast even if you don’t have the choice (only one option, noodles) but well cooked and the view which is supposed to be beautiful (though we didn't get to enjoy it due to very cloudy weather during our stay). Staff doesn't speak English, which made communication difficult throughout our stay. The room isn't soundproof at all, we could hear other guests arriving outside around 11pm and their conversations as if they were right next to us, as well as motorcycles passing on the street below, which gets busy as early as 4am. The bathroom had a sewage smell from the moment we arrived, and the shower was broken (hot water still worked though). The electrical outlets looked freshly renovated but unfinished, with exposed wiring visible. The location is quite remote (nothing to eat within a 10-minute walk), and getting there means walking uphill on a poorly lit street at night, which isn't ideal if you're not comfortable with that. Also the hotel is close to a mosque (early morning call to prayer, worth knowing if you're a light sleeper)

The rooftop view of Semeru was amazing, and the staff were friendly and helpful; you can rent a scooter right from the homestay. I was absolutely satisfied 😀!
