We secured a room overlooking the flower garden ranch, and in the morning we could see cloud sea over the town of Kutsunai from across the ranch, which made us very satisfied with the room. Dinner was kaiseki, but everything felt neither good nor bad. The explanation of the dishes seemed somewhat inexperienced, and it took about 30 minutes to bring the first dish, indicating operational difficulties. Improvements are needed.

I was shocked when the staff asked me to leave early at breakfast because the 11:00 am check‑out was supposedly going to be crowded, yet it was barely busy. After paying $1,000.00 USD for the night I felt treated like an unwelcome guest. The food was mediocre, especially compared to the previous three days at Youtei Raku Suisan where I spent half the price and still got excellent food and service. Zaborin is overpriced, overrated, and clearly needs new management. With 40 years in hospitality, I’ve never seen a 5‑star resort perform worse than this. It was cold inside and outside, the water barely warm, and the atmosphere was uptight and snooty. I’ve stayed at many onsen ryokans and high‑end hotels in Japan over the past 40 years, and Zaborin is the lowest‑rated of them all. I’ll never recommend it and warn everyone not to go.

The setting was beautiful, the architecture impressive, the staff gracious, and the meals were delicious and beautifully presented.
