We stayed in a lovely apartment owned by a friendly couple whose garden was gorgeous; they even handed out firework sparklers for our kids while fireworks lit up Asahikawa that night. The only drawback was the absence of a door between the living area and the bedroom—apparently one had been removed to accommodate more furniture, forcing us to keep the lights off and be extra quiet after the kids slept.
