“top floor room facing the street you need earplugs in order to sleep”
The owner was kind and very helpful, but the room we stayed in was noisy and I had to request an extra cushion because it wasn’t comfortable.

I stayed at Guest House Aoi Nakamoto while attending a conference at RIMS of Kyoto University. The location was perfect. Nakamoto‑San took excellent care of his guesthouse and guests, offering great help, such as with the Takkyubin suitcase mailing system. It was my first time in a classic tatami room and I highly recommend the experience!

Very nice, quiet, and well‑located, with a host who is super accommodating and friendly. I stayed in a single room that was so calm I rested very well. I came in winter, when Kyoto is pretty cold, and the room and the whole place stayed warm. There’s a kitchen with a fridge, microwave, kettle, and a table to eat. The bathroom is nice, with a Japanese‑style bathtub and two other rest rooms. I’ll definitely come back next time I visit and totally recommend it! :)

The facilities and system are excellent overall, exceeding expectations. I could see the owner’s diligence and deep philosophy, which added to the experience. The host was very kind, making this trip a great memory. Although the guesthouse is called a “guesthouse,” it offers private rooms with locks, ensuring privacy. The first‑floor dining area, bathroom, and shared bath are well‑organized, with a reservation system for bathing. It’s good value for solo travelers or families, especially for students at Kyoto University or Kyoto University of the Arts, and for those looking for a temporary place to study. The bus to Kyoto Station or Sanjo Shijo runs frequently, so that’s convenient. Towels, both large and small, are provided and changed daily, and there’s a hair dryer. (I brought my own, unfortunately.) As a student looking for a place, I’m grateful for the warm welcome and excellent accommodation. Good luck! 😊 The only downside was minimal; I didn’t encounter any major issues. One thing to note is that I used one room, so I’m not sure about others. Very large families might find it uncomfortable, and the shared spaces can be crowded. While transportation to the city center is good, it takes a bit longer because it’s a bit far. However, the Sira‑kawa and Sakyo‑ku areas are fine.

The location is very convenient, just one block from a bus line, and the building itself is quiet, especially the guest rooms. A 24‑hour market is nearby, great for snacks and take‑out. This guesthouse is within walking distance of Ginkaku‑ji and close to the Philosopher’s Walk. If you want to experience the quieter side of Kyoto, this neighborhood is ideal. It would have been nice to have a small sitting area, aside from the eating counter in the kitchen.
